World War II comes to an end in Europe: cities are ruined, millions of people are deceased, wounded or displaced. Several countries in Europe start to work together more and more. In 1957, the European Economic Community is formed by six countries, to further strengthen their collaboration. This can be seen as the early European Union, that officially comes to life in 1993, with the Maastricht Treaty. In 1995, Finland joins, together with Austria and Sweden. It is the beginning of a united and resilient Europe. In 2025 we celebrate 30 years of Finland in the European Union with a unique coincard with 30 cents.
Finland’s EU policy
Today, Finland is an active, pragmatic and results-oriented EU Member State. Priorities in policy are the promotion of common values, growth and competitiveness and effective regulation. This way, the European Unions external and internal security can be strengthened. Next to this, Finland also focusses on the importance of the EU’s resilience to crisis and developing its ability to both respond and to benefit from global trends, such as climate change.
Design
For this issue, Helsinki Mint has minted Finland euro cents: a 20 cent and a 10 cent, and placed them in a coincard. This is the first time these coins in coincard are being issued in Finland. On the obverse of the coincard, a number 3 is visible, forming “30” with the round shape of the 20 eurocent coin. The background shows a illustration of Finland nature. The reverse shows several small illustrations of Finlands wildlife. In between, words like Union, EU and Finland can be spotted.
